Tavern Brawl

Premise: Team Round-Robin Tournament

This is the oldest online Hero Realms event and one that has minimal level and time requirements. The Tavern Brawl is a team event consisting of weekly head-to-head matches. Every team is comprised of 5 members (each one playing a character of a different hero class). Each team member will play with a single character throughout the season and is not to use that character outside of the Brawl until the season is completed. Players may also optionally participate in a role-playing their character in a season long story arc that is published on Realms Rising.

Team captains (known as Daredevils) determine the player matchups each week. Captains alternate who puts forward a team member and the other deciding who will play against them. Each match consists of 3 games (with all of them being played regardless of who wins). The team that wins the most matches gets the W. There is an end of season final match consisting of the top 2 performing teams in the league.

As of Season 3, there were 12 teams and the league was divided into two divisions, with the top 2 teams from each division playing in the “playoffs”.

  • Level Requirement: Level 3+ (S1 and S2 started at level 1, while S3 has players starting at level 3.)
  • Character Requirement: 1. Each player uses the same character throughout the entire season. Leveling up as the season progresses.
  • Complete Rules: Tavern Brawl Rules
  • How to Join: Each season a sign-up link is posted in the #tavern-brawl discord channel (and announced in other places as well).
  • Event Tracking: Each season is tracked using Google Forms and a Scoreboard spreadsheet (by agentc13).
  • Organizer: Nudeltulpe & gamefreak701

Hero Realms Premier Circuit

Premise: A series of rotating tournaments with individual player rankings for each character class.

This Hero Realms series has low level requirements, and can have minimal to high time requirements (depending on the format and number of characters that you have enrolled in each event). The HRPC is an individual series consisting of multiple tournaments of varying makeups. Players earn points and are ranked based on performance in each of the tournaments (each hero class is rated separately).

There is a playoff and multiple championship events (1 overall championship and 5 class specific ones) at the end of each season.

Hero Realms Highlander Series

Premise: Tournament series that requires participants to win games with multiple hero classes.

The Highlander Series has varying level requirements, and can have medium time requirements. The Highlander Series is comprised of multiple tournaments that are single elimination brackets. Participants must win a best of five match to progress. Once a participant has won a game with a hero class in the match, they cannot play another game using that hero class (this resets for each match).

Each season has 4 open events and a single invitation only championship tournament. The championship tournament requires players to win a best of nine match (winning once with each hero class).

Thandar Combat League

Premise: Short seasons of round-robin play with multiple tiers to move up

This Hero Realms league has low level requirements, and can have medium time requirements. The Thandar Combat League is a series of simultaneous round-robin tournaments broken up among tiers/divisions. There are multiple divisions in a ladder-type structure. Participants can move up and down the division ladder based on their performance throughout the season.

Each season lasts roughly 5 weeks with a short break in between seasons.

King of the Castle (Hail to the Kings)

Premise: Castle defense using Best of Five matches.

This Hero Realms event has high level requirements, and can have low to high time requirements. Hail to the Kings is a castle defense concept for Hero Realms Digital. Participants take turns assaulting a castle by issuing challenges to the Kings/Queens. Each assault is a best of 5 series.

After the initial run during beta, a few rules changes were made when HR launched full retail. These include moving to a Highlander style where participants can only win with a given class once per match, adding a second castle (and thus a second sovereign), and adding a randomizer to the the challenger list that takes the next two challengers on the list and randomizes which castle they will assault.

Joust

Premise: Five simultaneous single elimination tournaments consisting of mirror matches.

This Hero Realms even has high level requirements, and can have low to high time requirements. The Joust is a series of five tournaments that only include characters of a single Hero Class. When the five initial tournaments are done, the top two participants from each move on to a sixth event consisting of two separate round-robin divisions with a championship match.

  • Level Requirement: Level 12
  • Character Requirement: 1-5
  • Complete Rules: Joust Rules
  • How to Join: Announcements are posted in the #joust discord channel and handled through Challonge.

Survivor

Premise: Randomized blind matches until one person is left standing.

This Hero Realms event has high level requirements, and can have medium to high time requirements. Survivor is an elimination event based loosely on the long running television show of the same name. Players sign up to use up to one of each Hero Class in their run for glory. Once a participant loses with a Hero Class that is eliminated from their roster, when the run out of classes on their roster, they are eliminated. The last player standing is the Survivor Champion.

Predator

Premise: A ten round event where players hunt each other for trophies.

This Hero Realms series has high level requirements, and can have minimal time requirements. Predator is an event based on the movie series of the same name. It uses a similar setup to the Survivor event, with randomized matches and a roster of 5 Hero Classes. Unlike Survivor though, participants pick a “Predator” character to hunt the other players, and instead of playing to the last person standing participants strive to collect trophies (points). At the end of the even the player with the most points wins.

Hero Realms Legends Series

Premise: Official physical tournament series from Wise Wizard Games.

The legend series is a physical tournament held at various game conventions. The winner of each tournament gets immortalized in the game of Hero Realms by having a card made in their likeness. I wrote an article going over how things are usually handled and tips to prepare for it.

  • Complete Rules: There are no officially published rules, beyond the rules included with the physical game. Tournament format may vary based on number participants.

This event will happen over two separate parts:
The Swiss portion will be played without heroes and will be single game matches. The number of rounds will depend on the number of participants.
For the Top 8 portion, each player will select a hero class to use for the rest of the tournament. This will be a single elimination bracket seeded based on performance in the Swiss portion. These games will be played at level 3 and will be Best of 3 matches.

The winner will receive a Hero Realms promo card signed by Rob Dougherty.

This is a race tournament where players compete to finish the three challenge Stages: Mind, Body, and Spirit. For added Chaos, this tournament incorporates Pub games for added excitement, as well specialized rules that even encourage cheating. Unlike other tournaments, no one can be eliminated!
