In episode 36 of Sparks & Recreation Matt & Chris break a 3 week drought of new content with a mega dose of S&R. What Would You Do? What Would Jig Do? and Looking for Lethal are all up on deck before the main course, a large helping of ancestry discussion, including an overview and quick tutorial of how it all works, some initial strategy discussions and impressions, and an expose from Filtrophobe on the current beta iteration of Elf Wizard, which he has piloted to ridiculous win percentages. The episode rounds out with some Lua highlights on new community character creations from Aarkenell and WardenSlayer, before capping this extra helping of Sparks & Rec with Community Roundup, and the inaugural Taps & Scraps.

Lua Spotlight: Aarkenell's Demonologist

The Demonologist is all about summoning demons to do your bidding.

Your starting deck includes 3 minor demons and your skill (for 2g) lets you summon one of 3 random demons into play. (These summoned demons self-sacrifice when they leave play, so they don’t clog up your deck – and thematically, they are returning to wherever you summoned them from.) Each demon alone is fairly weak, but if you are able to keep them out on the board they can soon become a real problem for your opponent. To help you do this, the other card in your starting deck (other than gold) is a Shadow Gem – which gives you the option of taking 2 gold or paying 1 life to boost one demon’s defence by 2 until your next turn. (And of course, buying any guards – even cheap ones – from the market can really help you keep your demons in play.)

The Ability for the Demonologist is a Demonic Pact – it gives you a whopping 9 damage (more than the Fighter) but it will cost you 4 life.

Starting Cards

5x gold

1x ruby (2g)

1x Shadow gem – 2g OR lose 1 health to give target minion +2 shield until next turn.

1x Void Guard (champion) – 2 defence guard, 1 combat

1x Lesser Devourer (champion) – 2 defence guard. No damage, but each turn you can pay 1 life to increase its defence by 1 until it leaves play. (Which of course, makes it harder for your opponent to get to the other demons or champions you’ve bought.)

1x Shadow Feeder (champion) – 1 defence non-guard, 1 combat, and if you have another Demon minion in play gain 2 more combat (3 total).

Ability – Demonic Pact: 9 damage, -4 health

Skill – Summon Demon: Summon 1 of 3 random demons into play.

These are:

Fel hound – 1 defence non-guard, 2 combat

Demonic leech – Opponent loses 1 life (direct damage), and leech gains 1 shield/defence until it leaves play.

Succubus – 1 defence non-guard. Opponent’s champions all lose 1 shield/defence until the end of turn.

  1. My intention is for the skill, ultimately, is that if you have kept one of the summoned demons in play, using the skill again won’t summon a copy of that demon. (So if you have the Fel Hound out, your next summon won’t be another Fel Hound.) And if you manage to get all 3 out and keep them there, future uses of the skill will give you raw damage (or some other effect to be decided). However, my current coding capabilities cannot comprehend the creation of such curious constructs.
